Dating safety tips

Simple habits for chatting online and meeting in person.

Chatting online

  • Take your time. Get to know someone in the app before you share your number or social accounts.
  • Protect your details. Don’t share your home address, workplace details, daily routine, or ID documents early on.
  • Never send money. Not for an emergency, a ticket, an investment or a “gift”. Anyone asking for money, crypto, gift cards or bank details is very likely a scammer. Report them.
  • Look for the ✓. A verified badge means the person verified their phone number. It isn’t a background check, so still use your judgement.
  • Watch for red flags: refusing to video call, a story that keeps changing, pushing to move off the app quickly, love declared very fast, or pressure of any kind.
  • Video call first. A call in the app is a good way to check someone is who they say they are before meeting.

Meeting in person

  • Meet in public. Choose a busy café, restaurant or public place for the first few dates. Never at your home or theirs.
  • Tell a friend. Share who you’re meeting, where, and when you expect to be back. Share your live location if you like.
  • Get there and back on your own. Use your own transport or a ride you booked, so you can leave whenever you want.
  • Keep your phone charged and with you.
  • Stay in control. Know your limits with alcohol, and keep your drink with you.
  • Leave if it feels wrong. You don’t owe anyone an explanation. Staff at the venue can help you get a ride or call for help.

Consent is a clear, freely given yes, and it can be withdrawn at any time. Someone who is drunk, asleep or pressured can’t consent. If you’re not sure, ask, and respect the answer.

After a date

If someone made you feel unsafe, block and report them in the app, even if you’ve stopped talking. Reports are confidential. If you were hurt, please contact the police and get support.
